2024 Heavy Ion Accelerators Impact Report

Impact report, December 2024

This inaugural Impact Report showcases the impact of HIA’s capabilities on Australia’s National Science and Research Priorities and tells the stories of the people who make this possible.

My role in this publication was to write many of the stories and edit the final report. I interviewed people and drafted content, gave advice on developing the overall publication, edited all content for consistency and style, and conducted final proofreading checks.

Stories I wrote:

  • The accidental physicist who’s now a world leader in nuclear research

  • Diverse days and high-tech repairs

  • Inspiring new generations of STEM enthusiasts and their teachers

  • Empowering Australia’s space industry

  • Taking new shielding materials from concept to reality

  • Binar CubeSats pioneer radiation detection technology

  • Liquid lenses for better satellite monitoring

  • From student to space engineer: finding new solutions for Australian space tech

  • How nuclear physics helps protect the environment

  • Unlocking stellar secrets: investigating how heavy elements are formed

  • HIAF and Los Alamos join forces to enhance dark matter detector precision

  • ANU experts training future leaders in the Asia-Pacific region

  • HIA supports hands-on approaches to build Australia’s nuclear educated workforce
